Celebrated Indigenous artists, Miimi & Jiinda, have unveiled their new homewares and fashion label.
Ochre by Miimi & Jiinda features a range of ethically produced robes, scarves, bags, cushions and ceramics that incorporate natural fabrics and materials.
Miimi & Jiinda (miimi meaning mother and jiinda meaning sister) is the creation of Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti and Bundjalung artists Lauren Jarrett and Melissa Greenwood.
The mother and daughter duo are well known for their range of Indigenous artworks and prints and were keen to explore new mediums with the Ochre range.
Said Melissa, “I’ve always been fascinated with the concept of First Nations design and fashion and wanted to explore the translation of my artworks into wearable art.
“My passion is to find new ways to showcase the innate beauty of our culture, so the launch of our new label was a natural progression for the Miimi & Jiinda brand.”
“Ochre by Miimi & Jiinda has been designed to celebrate and showcase the diversity of Indigenous culture, art and fashion.
“Ochre is the oldest pigment on earth and holds cultural significance to First Nations people.
“As a medium used regularly for storytelling, we thought it was a great fit with our vision for sharing our stories beyond our traditional canvas and art prints.”
In addition to launching their new homewares and fashion range, Miimi & Jiinda has also recently opened a bespoke gallery in the New South Wales township of Urunga.
Said Melissa, “Opening our Ochre Gallery has definitely been a highlight of 2021 for us.
“The gallery showcases our artwork and Ochre by Miimi & Jiinda collection but also features other artwork, fashion items, homewares and retail products from other First Nations brands from the Gumbaynggirr nation and right across Australia.
“The intention behind having a physical store was to create as an immersive experience for our customers to absorb the essence of our brand and engage and support other First Nations’ businesses.”
Ochre by Miimi & Jiinda is now available for purchase online at www.miimiandjiinda.com or at Miimi & Jiinda’s Ochre Gallery located at 4375 Giinagay Way, Urunga.
